N IKE, Inc. and USA Basketball brought the world’s best basketball teams and top musical performers to New York City for the inaugural World Basketball Festival, a four-day celebration of the performance and culture of the game, an event that Nike has committed to reprising every two years.

This ambitious and exciting undertaking by Nike Inc. and its three basketball brands: Nike Basketball, Jordan Brand and Converse should be a welcoming addition to the international basketball community where the immense level of competition has risen drastically over the last two decades.

Over the course of 4 days, the World Basketball Festival contained multiple events being played out over some of New York City’s most important locations. August 12th saw the legendary Times Square transformed into a sporting venue as a 3,000 seat open-air arena was placed in it. Members of the US Basketball team put on an exhibition that day and one of the world’s largest recording artists, Jay Z, entertained spectators as part of the opening day’s festivities. The festival then transformed Harlem’s Rucker Park where practices and scrimmages from Brazil, France, and Puerto Rico’s National Teams took place. At the conclusion of the 4-day event, the United States took on France and China went at it against Puerto Rico in a double-header exhibition at the famed Madison Square Garden on Sunday, August 15th.

The World Basketball Festival was definitely a much needed and refreshing change to the everlasting season of summer MLB. When ESPN’s top 10 features nothing but baseball plays, you know its been an exciting day in the world of sports. But all jokes aside, this event is a must see. Not only does it help bring basketball awareness and exposure to nations worldwide but it also allows USA basketball fanatics to better appreciate international ball players as well.

Yuketen Back Pack

Yuketen Back Pack

Remember when August would swing around and the summer would be winding down symbolizing the beginning of another school year? Seeing this back pack reminded me of that time – buying new supplies and getting ready for the grind.

Yuketen is a brand all about high quality. They go around the world looking for the best materials and constructs everything in the United States. This California brand has put the same amount of effort and attention to detail in the Yuketen Melton Wool Back Pack. Although it is time for back to school, this isn’t a back pack for adolescent children who have not developed a taste for finer things. Yuketen clearly had someone else in mind. I would say this is a classic outdoor accessory that can be used for anything: hiking, work, traveling — day to day use. What I love is the color of the back pack with the leather straps makes it unique yet definitely an item that can be used every day.

A friend recently told me about Jess Gomez and I loved her sexy, yet natural, look right away. So I was pleased to come across these photos of her, shot by Stef King. Wearing not much more than a white bedsheet, the Sports Illustrated model manages to show off her curves, and look smokin’ hot yet very fresh-faced – all at the same time. More photos after the jump.

KANYE WEST | THE PORTRAIT OF POWER from AJANAKU on Vimeo.

Mr. West changes up the music video game with his new single Power. With amazing visuals and pacing, Kanye puts himself in the shoes of the Dionysus, the Greek god of wine and intoxication. Directed by Marco Brambilla, the video successfully depicts “what power would look like in a sort of timeless way.” It’s 300 meets Inception meets MTV.

GQ 1

Richard Chai may have only launched his menswear line in 2008 (his women’s line’s been around since 2004), but 2010′s proving to be Chai’s year. Chai was recognized as one of Korea’s top ten best designers after he gained substantial experience working for fashion industry heavyweights such as Geoffrey Beene, Donna Karan, and Lanvin. Soon after Chai graduated from designing for the beloved Marc Jacobs and released his own line in 2008. He then not only scored a nomination as GQ’s Best New Menswear Designer in America, but in June he won the CFDA Swarovski Award for Menswear (sort of like a Best New Artist Grammy).

In this month’s issue of GQ, Chai provides insight into his own personal fashion and life style. What I found most intriguing about Chai was his ability to incorporate the idea of being fashionable and stylish in every aspect of his life. Whether it was his Japanese sock collection or his stubborn need to use only a classic #2 Pencil for his portfolio, Chai’s meticulous attention to detail allowed him to create his very own life “style” in a sense. It helps to be fashionably knowledgeable for obvious reasons but it is more important to express your own unique style in everyday life. So if you take anything from Richard Chai, at the very least try and imitate his idea of individuality. Love your own style and be confident both in what you wear and how you act because it makes a world of difference.

Check out the issue for all of Richard Chai
